JVP totally opposed to NE re-merger
by L.S. Ananda WEDAARACHCHI
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is totally opposed to the
re-merger of the Northern and Eastern provinces, said Matara District
JVP Parliamentarian Jinadasa Kithulagoda.
He said that the JVP worked hard and went to court to demerge the
North and East provinces.
The landmark Supreme Court judgement ruled that the demerger was the
greatest achievement of the party which stood for a unitary Sri Lanka,
he said.
He categorically denied any agreement between Sarath Fonseka and the
TNA led by R. Sampanthan.
Meanwhile, Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian K.
Thurairatnasingham said that the TNA extended its support to Sarath
Fonseka at the upcoming presidential election after getting him to agree
to a number of conditions including the merger of the North and the
East.
He said that Fonseka and the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe
signed the agreement.
"We have already informed diplomats and foreign governments and their
representatives about the agreement, he said.
The TNA will never deviate from its policy of establishing an
autonomous rule for the Tamil-speaking people in the North and the East.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa did not agree to the TNA conditions and
therefore, his Government should be overthrown, Thurairatnasingham said.
