Adikarana Sanga Nayaka, Suvisuddaramadipathi of Suvisuddaramaya, Wellawatte Most Ven. Wellawatte Gnanabiwansa Thera has passed away.  The cremation will take place today, January 10 at Henry Pedris Grounds, Colombo 5 at 2.30 p.m.

Deputy Minister of Fisheries Neomal Perera launched a drinking water scheme at Manthivu in Puttalam recently. The scheme was completed at a cost of Rs.1750000.00 by the Ministry of Fisheries.


Poll card delivery by Jan. 18

Delivery of official poll cards commenced on January 8 and will be completed within 11 days, Post Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake told the Sunday Observer.

Arrangements are now in place to distribute all poll cards among voters from January 8.It is scheduled to be completed by January 18.


Careers in higher education

EDEX Expo is the premier event in the field of careers and higher education.EDEX 2009 held last January was a tremendous success both in Colombo and Kandy.

The dates and venue for this year’s program is January 15, 16 and 17 at the BMICH, and January 19 and 20 at Kandy City Centre.


Christian discourse

A discourse on the doctrine of Christian Liberation Theology organised by the Kithusara Group will be held on January 16 at the Negombo Town Hall from 2.00 p.m. onwards.The program will comprise a poster display depicting the principles of Christian liberation theology, exhibition and sales of books, newspapers, articles, magazines, leaflets, audio cassettes and video cassettes.

A documentary film on those who sacrificed their lives and songs highlighting the fundamental principles of Christian liberation theology will be sung.The keynote address will be delivered by the Editor of the Kithusara news bulletin, Mahinda Namal. -LF


2010 - IT Fertility Year

The Postal Department has declared 2010 as the Information Technology Fertility Year. This will be a continuation of the year 2009 theme which was 'Information Technology Year', Post Master General M.K.B. Disanayake told the Sunday Observer.

According to the Post Master General, the aim of this theme was to increase the usage of Information Technology and provide an efficient service to customers through the use of computers in post offices.

Thirty nine year old K. H. A. S. Rosenta Kumarasinghe who is in End stage kidney failure, is in need of B positive kidney.

Rosenta not only appeals for a kidney but also funds for surgery and other incidental expenses which will cost around Rs. 400,000.

Special arrangements are being made for the over 100,000 displaced people in Vavuniya to vote at the forthcoming Presidential Election. Additional ballot boxes have been brought from Colombo for this purpose. Here officials in Vavuniya transport the ballot boxes.
