Thursday. The cadres who were engaged in a pitched battle
around this time last year, are seen engaged in Thai Pongal
rituals at their relief centre.

President chief guest at Thurstan event
Celebrating their 60th anniversary, the Thurstan
College, Colombo will be holding a commemoration event on January 24
with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the distinguished Thurstan old
boy, participating as the chief guest.
The Secretary of Defence, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa will
attend the event as the guest of honour along with Commanders of the
Three Armed Forces and Inspector General of Police. The Thurstan
College Armed Forces and Police Committee have decided to
commemorate their War Heroes in January every year. On January 11,
2009 the War Heroes Monument built in school premises, was unveiled
by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
UPFA supporter killed in Madurankuliya
One dead and five were injured when an armed gang
fired on UPFA supporters yesterday around 3.00 pm at Madurankuliya.
The armed gang had fired on UPFA supporters who were
proceeding to Anamaduwa for an election meeting held under the
patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
New community hall
The new Community Hall and Shrine Room constructed
for the benefit of residents of the Dehiwala Vanarathana Road low
income housing scheme will be opened by the Minister of Youth
Empowerment and Socio Economic Development Arumugam Thondaman on
January 23.
The new community hall was constructed by the
Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Socio Economic Development at a
cost of Rs. 1.5 million.
The Dehiwala Vanarathana Road Housing Scheme
comprising 300 houses was built in 1984.
Co-ordinating Secretary to the Ministry M. R. Ismail
said that the new Community Hall was quite spacious. In addition to
the Shrine Room it also has facilities such as a Conference Room,
Reading Room and Library, Computer Training Centre and a Vocational
Training Centre. This will be a boon for these poor residents and
their children, Ismail said.
Weda program
The Wayamba Engineering Diplomates’ Association (WEDA)
with the assistance of the ‘Rotary Club of Kurunegala” has organised
a half day seminar on “Good Grooming for Professional Appearance” at
9.00 am today at Hotel Season, Lake round, Kurunegala. Well-known
beautician, Mrs. Nayana Karunarathne will conduct the program.
Malini Jayasinghe dies in Australia
Former Science teacher of Musaeus College, Malini
Jayasinghe, passed away after a brief illness. She was a prominent
figure among the Sri Lankan Community in Melbourne.
She raised funds directing well-known dramas, such
as Hunuwataye Kathawa, Bakmaha Akuna, Kapuwa Kapothi, Nari Bena just
to name a few. She has also been co-ordinating many other fund
raising events, such as food fairs and dinner dances.
She is the wife of Shyamon Jayasinghe, former
secretary to the Ministry of Labour & Vocational Training and mother
of former leader of the Musical group "Burn", Ashok and the
mother-in-law of Channa De Silva, former Sub Editor in the Sunday
Observer editorial.
Her funeral will take place in Melbourne, Australia
today.
Sri Lankan student raped in Malaysia
PETALING JAYA: A 19-year-old Sri Lankan student has
been hospitalised after she was raped and robbed by a man while
walking back to her rented house in Tasik Semenyih, Malaysia.
The psychology student from Nottingham University
was alone when the man approached her and hit her on her head using
a sharp object, causing her to lose consciousness. Kajang OCPD Asst.
Comm Shakaruddin Che Mod said the man dragged her into an empty
house in the area before raping and robbing her at about 8 p.m. on
Wednesday.
The girl was shocked to find the man on top of her
when she regained consciousness.
"When she became conscious, the man fled," he said.
Police have yet to record any statements as the
woman was not in the right frame of mind to talk. ACP Shakaruddin
said no arrests had been made so far. (The Star)
Leukaemia child patient needs help
Two year old baby Jerome Cooray of No. 16/4,
Constantine Lane, Koralawella, Moratuwa is diagnosed with Juvenile
Myelomonocytic Leukaemia. Bone marrow transplant will be the only
successful treatment for this condition, according to consultant
Clinical Oncologist, National Cancer Institute, Dr. Damayanthi C.
Pieris. Bone marrow transplant is not available in Sri Lanka, and
had to be performed at Singapore National University Hospital, which
is expected to cost around Rs. 16 m.

Mrs. Lucille Hyacinth Gunawardena,
mother of Lake House (ANCL) Company Secretary, Kumudu Gunawardena
passed away.
She was the mother of Jayasrinie
(USA), Dr. Sathrika (SJGH) and Kumudu. The funeral will take place
at Borella, Kanatte. today, January 17 at 4.30 pm from 378/2,
Araliya Gardens, Nawala. She is the wife of Cyril (Superintendent of
Radiographers, Health Dept).
