Arulsamy new MP
by P.Krishnaswamy
Leader of the Workers’ Liberation Front (WLF) S. Arulsamy who took
oaths last Thursday as MP to fill the slot created by the demise of
Upcountry People’s Front (UPF) leader Periyasamy Chandrasekaran told the
Sunday Observer that he has written to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, SLFP
General Secretary, Minister Maitripala Sirisena, UPFA General Secretary,
Minister Susil Premajayanth, Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa
MP and other party frontliners expressing his desire to join the ruling
UPFA.
He contested the 2005 General Elections as UPFA candidate but later
quit the party and formed his own party, the WLF. Under the Elections
Rules, he was appointed MP as he had polled the highest number of votes
next to P. Chandrasekaran.
Arulsamy said that his was the first among the political parties of
the plantation community to support the UPFA Government prompted by
conviction of President Rajapaksa’s sincere commitment towards the
socio-economic uplift of the impoverished plantation community.
The President, during the last four years, implemented many
short-term and long-term development programs, unprecedented in the
history, for the community with pledges of more such programs as has
been incorporated in the extended ‘Mahinda Chintana’ version, he said.
