Top 5 Romantic Destinations

Hunas Falls, Kandy

A romantic destination couples swear by, your honeymoon wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Hunas Falls. More than just a romantic getaway, the Hunas Falls hotel is home to a special Eternal Earth project where tree-planting is done to offset carbon emissions by domestic and tourist visitors.

Offering fascinating sunsets, early-morning mists and a relatively cool temperature, the environment at Hunas Falls is still like before, unpolluted and pristine. Rest amid the hotel garden or enjoy refreshing hillside walks hand-in-hand. Hunas Falls might be supposedly named after a gecko but its meaning is more than just that!

Pigeon Island, Trincomalee

It might be romantic to go sailing near Pigeon Island but conservation is the key. According to the Sri Lanka Wetlands Information and Database (SLWID), Pigeon Island National Park is made up of two small islands: large and small Pigeon Island with plenty of rocky islets situated about one kilometre off-shore.

What is vital to be protected is the main Pigeon Island reef which is home to 74 per cent of live hard coral cover where 25 per cent of soft corals dominate the rocky islets. Over 100 species of corals and more than 300 species of reef fish have been identified in the Trincomalee area, and many of these species are found within the Pigeon Island National Park. However, while kayaking and canoeing there, please make sure you and your lover keep the best interests of Mother Nature at heart because she needs love too!

Alankunda Beach, Kalpitiya

Whether you want a beautiful beach to propose to your loved one or just want to celebrate your honeymoon, Alankuda in the Kalpitiya area is one of the most romantic destinations.

Enjoy indulging in activities like kayaking, canoeing, sailing, kite and wind surfing on the azure waters. Alankuda beach is a private getaway for those who need peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the Southern touristy beaches.

From October to May, Alankuda beach offers sun, sea and sand with certain bouts of showers which make the breeze cooler at night. Take in the sea breeze and revive your love!

Rumassala Mountain, Galle

The site of the epic encounter between Rama and Ravana, the mountain of Rumassala in etched in memory as a romantically love-lorn mountain. When Rama’s brother Lakshman was nearly killed in battle, the only way he could live was to take herbs that had to be fetched from the Himalayas.

The hero in the story was Hanuman, the Monkey God who forgot the names of the herbs, broke a chunk of the Himalayan mountain and threw it in Sri Lanka to what is now called Rumassala. ‘Ru-mas-sala’, could be translated as ‘Beautiful Rock’.

Incidentally, its present name ‘Buona Vista’, seems an echo of the original meaning, since ‘Buona Vista’ implies, ‘Beautiful Sight’. Among precious herbs on the mountain is ‘kalu-nika’, a medical plant with life-giving properties. So love also gives life!

Turtle Beach, Rekawa

What better way to prove your love to your sweetheart than by helping a turtle nest? Every night in the turtle hatching season, female turtles saunter ashore to Rekawa beach to lay eggs.

Keep watch under the starry sky until they arrive, watch and help them dig their nest. The Turtle Conservation Project helps protect the turtles and you can volunteer to give a helping hand. Afterwards, sleep under the stars and wake up to watch a beautiful sunrise together.
