 UB40
UB40 is a British reggae band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, UK.
They’d meet up in the bars and clubs around Moseley, some of the members
had to scrape by on less than £8 a week unemployment benefit. In the
summer of 1978, the nucleus of UB40 began rehearsing in a local
basement. Robin Campbell’s younger brother Ali Campbell, Earl Falconer,
Brian Travers and James Brown all knew one other from Moseley School of
Art, whilst Norman Hassan had been a friend of Ali since school.
Initially, they thought of themselves as a ‘jazz-dub-reggae’ band,
but by the time Robin was persuaded to join and they’d recruited Michael
Virtue and Astro – who’d learnt his craft with Birmingham sound-system
Duke Alloy – the group had already aligned themselves to left-wing
political ideals and forged their own identity, separate from the many
punk and Two Tone outfits around at that time.
The band has placed more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and
has also achieved considerable international success. The band has sold
over 70 million records. Their number 1 hit singles include ‘Red Red
Wine’, ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and ‘I Got You Babe’.
If it happens again
(Chorus)
If it happens again I’m leaving
I’ll pack all my things and go
If it happens again
There’ll be no looking back
And I won’t say I told you so
I won’t say I told you so
You did what you were told
And you took the strain
Been left out in the cold
Got yourself to blame
But believe me,
If it happens again I’m leaving
If it stays the same I’m gone
When you’re stabbed in the back
And there’s salt in the wound
Then it’s time to move along
(Chorus)
If it happens…
No more spanners in the works,
All the works been done
Had your face rubbed in the dirt
On show for every one
But believe me
If it happens again I’m leaving
If it stays the same I’m gone
When compromise is the song you sing
It’s been going on too long
(Chorus)
If it happens…
(Repeat Chorus)
