Schoolchildren to get free books under Pragna Pradeepa

A massive stock of schoolbooks and stationery material worth Rs. 6.5
m will be distributed to over 100,000 needy children in the Colombo
District, under the auspices of the Pragna pradeepa educational program
on Friday, Feb. 19 at Campbell Park, Borella.
The programm will commence at 3.00 p.m. under the patronage of the
Pragna Pradeepa founder, Jayantha de Silva and the Sarvodaya Leader Dr.
A.T. Ariyaratne.
In addition to schoolbooks, the organisers will distribute school
uniform material and footwear among children.
Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Jayantha de Silva said the Pragna
Pradeepa was started 20 years ago and over 1.5 million needy
schoolchildren have benefitted so far under the scheme.
He said over 1,000 children will also receive financial assistance on
this day.
Sri Lanka honoured Jayantha de Silva with the "Desha Shakthi" title
several years ago.
He was also conferred with a doctorate by the Martial Art University,
USA and the Muragaki Award by the Japanese Government.
