CBL extends hand to less privileged
In its commitment to providing education to marginalized and less
privileged children, Ceylon Biscuits Ltd (CBL) recently extended its
well known CSR scheme, Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara to children of
prisoners.
The Shishyadara were handed over to the children at a simple ceremony
held at the Welikada Prison, recently where Major General V.R. Silva,
Commissioner General of prisons was the chief guest.
Started ten years ago by CBL, as a community development project,
Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara has thousands of beneficiaries and ranked
number one among CBL’s impressive CSR portfolio. Contributing millions
of rupees, the scheme assists students to continue with primary level
education. CBL is ready to continue assisting the top line students who
have achieved excellent results at Ordinary and Advanced Level
examinations, with further higher education.
Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara aims to maximize educational opportunities
for those in need, and we are happy to extend this programme to children
of inmate prisoners who otherwise would not have an opportunity’ said
Nandana Wickramage, Group Director and Head of Marketing and Sales of
Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. “Assisting these children who’s living environment
may not be conducive or supportive towards education is a significant
attribute for CBL’s Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara Programme, and this year
we have granted the schemes to children and hope to increase the number
in the near future. He further mentioned that children of war heroes who
died in action and those of disabled soldiers have been beneficiaries in
the past.
Wickramage noted that the educational support programme has helped
some students from rural schools who have obtained straight A’s in all
the subjects offered at O’Levels progress to very good A’ Level results
that have enabled them to gain entrance to the National Medical College.
“In these instances, we provide the support all through their
university years” he added.
