Satisfaction
by Kethmini Hasara Dharmasena
Wind was blowing roughly and I
was trying hard to light a candle, few matches wasted. When I was
struggling with the wind another hand came to my help covering it from
the wind, I lift the candle. I lifted my head with a warm look of
thanks.
“You!” I was taken a back. I never thought she would have the courage
to come near my mother’s grave.
“How dare you come near her? What do you want now? Aren’t you
satisfied with this? What more do you want?” I shouted with pain. She
stared with astonished eyes.
“Why are you acting as though you don’t understand anything? We were
happy before you came into our lives”. The joys of my childhood started
to come to my mind. I remembered the last trip we went.
Mum, Dad, my sister and I went to Kandy. Mum and Dad were very happy
and they were happy to see us enjoying too. We all took a photo hugging
each other. I thought then that we had all the happiness in the world.
Time to time troubles came. But they were magically solved. I loved my
family and that life. I was fifteen years then and now I am twenty-five.
Things have changed and so have I. Now I am a man capable of handling
this woman.
“Why did you come here?” I asked her.
“I want .... to apologize...”
“For what? For bewitching and fooling my father?”
“No, about your mother, Latha”
“So you have a heart, But I wonder why you don’t feel sorry for the
things that happened before?”
There was no answer. How could she know about the things that
happened in our family. She wasn’t there but I saw everything. I saw my
mother fainting and pleading with my dad not to go to her. |
