Poem for a daughter who is already born
On the day you were born the joy workers warmed
their hands at the fire that was lit
by the match of your life.
Night after night I hypnotize myself with the voice of your breath
as if it were a lighthouse flashing for a sailor almost guzzled
by the sea's teeth. TR: Vivian Eden Ronny Someck
In this poem, Israeli poet Ronny expresses
father's deep love for the new born daughter. The daughter's birth has
given a target and purpose to his life. It is like a beacon of light
from a lighthouse which leads sailors to their destinations. She is so
lovable that a mere breath of the new born daughter would hypnotise him.
The poet has used simple but evocative language to express deep love of
a father for his new born daughter. - Indeewara Thilakarathne
Love of my life
There are so many beautiful things
in this world
You are the only star in my world...
I never thought...
I never felt that...
The greatest happiness
in my life was hiding...
in your eyes and laughter...
You are the only girl,
Who can win my heart...
You gave light and happiness
for my lonely life...
I never thought,
I never felt that,
You will be a shadow of
my life...
But now I feel...
You are the love of my life... Nimesha Ruchirani Peiris,
The poem is on the theme of love which has
been exploited to the maximum by generations of poets throughout the
ages. In these lines, the narrator describes how a girl is consumed by
the idea of love. Particularly, the last line is very effective and
strikes a note that 'love' has now become an integral part of the girl's
life. The poet uses common place metaphors and a down to earth language
to express the views on love. -Indeewara
I vote for my heart
The new dew drops were graceful
Enriching my life along with time
A feeling, touching the deepest point
You wrote a new chapter of my life
Enlightened my life with a meaning
A reason which I longed in my life
Woke me up from the dreams at night
Lead me to reality not a fantasy, nor lie
Truly it is, so wonderful to feel
Your love, a love of a life time
The way you loved, my love, my love
Cuddling my heart with your smiles
Though it's daytime, though it's night
Lie in my arms and sleep to the rhyme
Of what my heart speaks out and chimes
Your name my Jasmine, just be by my side
Hold on to me, I will hold you with might
The strength of our love is immense, my life
Though whirlwinds are sent to part us with time
They end up like breezes, soothing our lives
So little we've come, far more left to go
Forever as one we'll move on and on
I vote for my heart the pearl of my eye
You conquered my heart, blessed it with light
I cast my vote, for the maiden time
As you're the one, who'd be Queen of my life
It's not just one day but throughout my life
You filled me with moments of Valentine Sankhapadma

The poet describes deep-felt love for a
passionate lover. A significant aspect of the poem is that the poet has
used a day-to-day metaphor that is voting to narrate the feeling of a
girl in love. The maiden love has given a meaning to her life and
therefore, she cast her 'vote' for the maiden love. The poet effectively
evolves the growing love which is built on unsuspecting fidelity
particularly on the part of the girl who is the narrator of the poem.
Poet uses a matter-of-fact diction and ideas are expressed convincingly.

Sons and daughters of nation. Santhushti Ekanayake
The poet rejoices over the end of the
conflict which consumed thousands of lives over three decades. In a
matter of fact language, the poet says the nation can now live be in
peace. It is a plea for peace. -Indeewara |
