Kandy (583 points) take top berth at Masters Athletic championships

MASTERS ATHLETICS: Kandy District's K. M. Karunaratne became champion
in the under 70 age group at the Sixth Masters Athletic Championships
held at the Bogambara Stadium over the weekend. There were over 450
athletes participated at the meet.
The evergreen Karunaratne very actively participated and who is also
the President of the Central Province Veterans Athletic Association. In
the competition, Kandy District came on top with 583 points. Colombo
District were second with 464 points and Gampaha were third with 394
points. Kegalle fourth with 214 points and Ratnapura fifth with 74
points.
The opening ceremony was held with Ms Shirmi Weerakoon, Secretary of
the Central Province Sports and Industries as chief guest while awards
were distributed on the final day by DIG Pujith Jayasundera.

Another husband and wife champion combination - R.A. Chandradasa
(winner of 80 metres hurdles for under 70 years age group who
also came second in 300 metres hurdles with wife K.G.G. Manike
of Ratnapura who was the champion in the 60 year age group, in
the 80 metres hurdles, 300 metres hurdles, 100 and 200 metres
events. |
The champion couple ....Janath Wijesinghe from Kandy District
won the 400 metres for men in 45-age group and Mrs. Wijesinghe
came first in 100 and 200 metres for women in 35-year age group. |
