New Year celebrations in Pooneryn

Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva opened a children’s park in Pooneryn
on the Sinhala- Tamil New Year day. The Park was named ‘Freedom

Over 10,000 civilians living in the resettled villages in Pooneryn in
the Kilinochchi district, participated at the 'Avurudu' festival on the
New Year's day, organised by the Sri Lanka Army.
All these civilians were saved by soldiers attached to the 58
Division during the height of the war. Director General Operations of
the Sri Lanka Army Major General Shavendra Silva participated as the
chief guest. Maj.Gen. Silva was previously the General Officer
Commanding of the 58 Division who commanded the humanitarian operation
to rescue these people.
Maj. Gen. Chandana Rajaguru, Security Forces Commander Kilinochchi
along with several other senior military officials and soldiers took
part in the festival with the people.
The special New Year celebration, which included over 20 different
games was organised by the 66 Division commanded by Brigadier Channa
Kodithuwakku as a step to enhance the Army and civil coordination of the
area.
At the event Hindu religious ceremonies were held conducted by the
Chief Priest of the Amman Kovil of the area and garlanded Maj. Gen.
Silva wishing him more success and prosperity.
The 'Freedom Park' was declared open by Chief Guest Maj.Gen.
Shavendra Silva that was especially renovated for the benefit of the
children of the area.
The event concluded with a musical show held at the 'Freedom Park'
till mid night. |
