Jaffna-made products at Hands Lanka

For the first time a special pavilion will be allocated to showcase
'Made in Jaffna' products at the third Small and Medium Enterprise
Development Exhibition (Hands Lanka) which will be held from June 10 to
20 at the BMICH, Colombo.
President of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
Kosala Wickramanayake who will be hosting the event said that they got a
very positive response form the Jaffna entrepreneurs and said that this
was the reason they decided to allocate a special pavilion for them.
He said that the new Minister of Small Industries, Douglas Devananda
too has pledged his support for the exhibition. "Already over 10
entrepreneurs have confirmed their participation to showcase their
products and there are also more inquiries," he said.
He said that with the peace returning to the North and East resulting
in availability of raw materiel self employment projects that were
stalled have once again started.
"This exhibition will give the Northern entrepreneur exposure to the
Colombo and international market and he will also have the opportunity
find buyers and even partners to surge his business," Wickramanayake
said.
The event is hosted in June enabling the tourism sector to plan ad
buy their products and get ready for the up coming tourist season. The
exhibition is being sponsored by the Handwerkskammer Koblenz, Chamber in
Germany with a sum of Rs. 1.7 million.
Sri Lankan reprehensive of the project Peter Rechmann said that they
have been running a project with the FCCISL for seven years and very
happy with the response. "Stake holders from Germany and Netherlands
have invested 1.5 million Euro for this project which also covers the
North East," he said.
The German Chamber also sponsored the Kandy Handicraft Chamber and
has constructed two vocational training centre sin Ampara and Kalutara.
"Over 15o youths are being trained in these two centres," he said.
"As we are happy with the response form Sri Lanka we will look at
commenting another project in Sri Lanka," he said. |
