Navy victory celebrations
The Navy Guard of Honour with a 21-gun salute to commemorate Sri
Lanka's great victory over terrorism will be held on May 20 at 12.00
noon at the Navy Headquarters.
Meeting to discuss progress of Buddha Sasana
Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne, in his capacity as Minister of Buddha
Sasana and Religious Affairs, has summoned the Sasanarakshaka Executive
Committee to discuss future progress of the Buddha Sasana.
The Prime Minister will present a series of proposals for the
well-being of the Sasana. Problems relating to about 10,400 temples
spread throughout the island will also be discussed at the meeting with
the bhikkhus.
About sixty members of the Executive Committee, representing the
entire country, will participate at the meeting.
Jaffna markets booming
The post-war Jaffna market is fast catching up on its lost
opportunities. The demand for local produce is now on the increase.
A kilogram of grapes, sold for Rs.35 during the terrorist insurgency,
now fetches between Rs.450 and Rs.600.
The demand for tobacco is also increasing while the prices of fish
and dry fish have shot up.
Veteran carnatic musician dies
Veteran Carnatic musician ‘Kalabooshanam’ K. Shunnugampillai died at
the age of 92 on Friday.
He served as a senior artist at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation for several years and performed along with various leading
artistes from Sri Lanka and South India.
He was the father of former Director Tamil Service Sri Lanka
Rupavahini Corporation S. Viswanathan and Veteran Barathanatyam exponent
Kalasoori Vasuji Jegatheeswaran.
His funeral will take place at the Hindu Section, General cemetery
Kanatte Borella, tomorrow.
Pulz 2010 - IT show
Pulz 2010 - IT Show organised by the Ananda College Information and
Communication Society will be held on May 21, at the Ananda College
Kularathna Hall.
It will provide students an opportunity to interact with ICT and
acquire knowledge through experiencing ICT in a different perspective.
Pulz 2010’ will also be the initiation of the first ever school-based
ICT Union and the online ICT forum connecting all schools in Sri Lanka
to promote ICT in schools.
This will help students to interact with students of other schools,
share and gather knowledge and discuss important matters and get
solutions with the use of technology. All participant schools will be
registered for this forum at the event and other schools will be
integrated to the system in the next stages.
Students will also gain all-round ICT experience through various
programs on cutting edge technologies, interactive activities and from
the competitions. There will be intra-school and as well as inter-school
IT competitions islandwide. A school quiz will be held in which the
ACICTS annual challenge trophy will be inaugurated.
The Ananda College Information and Communication Technology Society
expects to uplift the ICT level in schools and as well as in others by
developing inter-school co-operation and to help make ICT to play an
important role in the education system of Sri Lanka in the 21st century,
to create a better future through ICT.
Ahlan wa Sahlan, an Arabian experience
An Arabian experience will be showcased at the Galadari Hotel on
Sunday, May 23 from 10.30 a.m.
There will be items from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and other
countries. The highlight of the afternoon will be a presentation of the
latest trends from Middle Eastern countries.
The proceeds of the fund raiser will fund the creche of 30 children
of the underprivileged working mothers in Kirillapone and scholarship to
support the needy university students.
It is organised by the Young Muslim Women’s League and sponsored by
Etisalat.

Lecture by Prof. Galmangoda
Prof. G.D. Sumanpala will deliver a guest lecture on Buddhism for the
21st Century, organised by the National Centre for Advanced Studies in
Humanities & Social Sciences (NCAS) on Tuesday, May 18 at 3.00 p.m. at
the NCAS premises at 6A, Sukhastan Gardens, Ward Place, Colombo 7.
Professor Sumanapala is a lecturer and a writer on Buddhism, Buddhist
philosophy, Meditation, Sinhala poetry and Ayurveda. He is a Senior
Professor at the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, University of
Kelaniya and the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and
Buddhist Studies.
It is open to the public.
AGM of Scout Association
The Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Scout Association will be
held on Saturday, May 22 at 10.00 a.m. at the Auditorium of Organisation
of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka, 275/75, Prof. Stanley
Wijesundera Mawatha, Colombo 7 .
Dr. Christian Raitz Von Frentz, Programme Manager, Delegation of the
European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives will be the chief guest.
