Thomians down Rajans 45-22

Despite a late second half challenge S.Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia
romped home to a comfortable 45 points (5 goals, 2 tries) to 22 (1 goal,
3 tries) win over Dharmaraja College in their schools Singer trophy
under 19 division one segment A rugby tournament played at Bogambara
Stadium, yesterday at half time Thomians led 28-0.
The way first half progressed it appeared that the Thomians will win
by a big margin. However after the short blast the Thomians did not play
with the same power and they also substituted the team with the full
quota of seven replacements from the bench.
The Thomians who had the better of the exchanges both in the scrums
and line outs opened scoring in the third minute through centre Anuradha
Willawara and full back Dervin Jayasinghe added the extra points.
In the 10th minute No.8 Rajendra Gunasekera stormed his way through
the Rajans defence to touch down mid left and Derwin Jayasinghe added
the extra points in the 14th minute Winger Jeremy Fernando made a
screeching for about 35 metres to go over mid left and fullback Dervin
Jayasinghe added the extra points.
In the 20th minute fullback Dervin Jayasinghe joined the line to
score near the post and added the extra points himself for the Thomians
lead 28-0 at the breather. Thomian continued their try spree in the 10th
minute of the game when that brilliant centre Anuradha Wellawara scored
for left and fullback Dervin Jayasinghe added the extra points with a
fine kick. S.Thomas led 35-0. In the 15th minute flanker Shewan
Kapuwatte scored off a forwards rush and this try went unconverted.
S.Thomas' 40-0. Rajans hit back in the 20th minute of this half when No.
8 Sathsara Basnayaka pounded his way to score mid left and this went
unconverted. Rajans 5-40.
In the 26th minute winger Jeremy Fernando dived over far left to
score his second try of the match. S. Thomas' 45-5.
In the final stages of the game saw the Rajans stage a great fight
back and the best try of the match came from winger Anura Ekanayaka who
intercepted a pass and sprinted 90 metres to score under the post, but
Lochana Ekanayaka failed to add the extra points.
