SLRFU summons SGM tomorrow
RUGBY: A Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Sri Lanka Rugby
Football Union (SLRFU) will be held tomorrow (May 31) to elect a new
President, Secretary and seven council members.
On the wake of a probable suspension from the International Rugby
Board (IRB), if an elected body is not in office by May 31 a hastily
convened AGM conducted by SLRFU on May 21, on the instructions of the
Minister of Sports C.B. Ratnayake saved the country from the ignominy of
being expelled from IRB which would have made Sri Lanka ineligible to
participate in international tournaments sanctioned by the IRB. Former
Sri Lanka number 8, Lasitha Gunaratne from North Western Province was
elected Vice-President who will also act as the President and Secretary,
Kiran Atapattu (Treasurer), Tuan Dole and Lasantha Wijesuriya were
elected as Council Members at the May 21 elections.
However, Lasantha Wijesuriya who was elected from the Central
Province at the May 21 elections, resigned on the next day, stating that
the AGM was not held in conformity with the constitution of the SLRFU.
In his place Hafiz Marikar of the Central Province was appointed.
The SLRFU Annual General Meeting was twice postponed during the last
two months due to lack of quorum.
