In Brief
Anthonians stunning win over Trinity
by S.M. Jiffry Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.
A 30 metre drop goal 10 minutes from the end, by full back by
Antonian full back Tharindu Chanaka saw St. Anthony's College score a
stunning 18 points (3 tries 1 drop goal) to 15 (1 goal, 1 try, 1
penalty) over their traditional rivals Trinity College in their schools
under 19 division one Singer trophy rugby tournament match played at
Nittawela yesterday. At half time the Antonians led 10-0.
This match was marred with controversy as both teams complained to
the Match Commissioner W.D.O. Wijewansa that the first half was played 8
minutes short. The Match Commissioner said that the match was 9 minutes
short. But referee Priyantha Nawaratne said that the duration of the
first half was correct and he went by his watch which indicated that it
went the full length. This 8 minutes loss of play was not made up in the
second half as the referee stood by his decision.
Trinity College indicated that they will be lodging an official
protest on this match.
