"The Asiri Group of Hospitals will expand its chain of helathcare services in the country by constructing hospitals in Kandy and Jaffna," said Chairman, the Central Hospital, Ashok Pathirage.

He was speaking at a ceremony to launch the Central Hospital in Colombo last Wednesday.

He said plans have been finalised to build a hospital in Kandy while the construction in Jaffna will not commence immediately as the market in the region has not fully developed.

The Central Hospital is the latest in the country's private sector healthcare industry built at a cost of US$ 5.5 billion. The 24-storey hospital equipped with the latest medical technology has a capacity to house 264 patients.

The state-of-the-art hospital is fully operational and is geared to provide the best medication with its 24-hour emergency services.

Pathirage said an objective of the ultra modern hospital is to attract foreign patients and to be the frontrunner in medical tourism in the country.

"The number of those travelling to other countries for medication has dropped following improvement in private sector healthcare in the country", he said.

The lack of facilities to treat cancer patients is a reason for people to seek medication abroad. Hospitals with advanced technology could treat cancer patients in the country.

The demand for quality healthcare services is increasing due to the pathetic state of the public sector healthcare in the country.

The Asiri Group operates four hospitals in Colombo and two in Matara.

The Central Hospital at Norris Canal Road replaces the Asha Central.

Pathirage said the Central Hospital will launch its Initial Public Offering (IPO) within the next six months for expansion and servicing of loan.

"We are confident that the hospital will break even within a short period.

There is no competition to the Asiri Group of Hospitals which is in the forefront of private sector helathcare in the country", Pathirage said.

"Steps will be taken to address flooding at the entrance to the hospital and give a facelift to the surrounding area", he said.

Twelve operating theatres, theatres for neurosurgery, maternity, genitourinary, orthopaedics and ophthalmology are outstanding features of the hospital.
