Morning has broken
Cat Stevens
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the word
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day
Folk-pop his forte
Like his contemporaries James Taylor and Don Mclean, Cat Stevens was
a crusader in writing fold - pop songs which turned out to be vibrant
meaningful pop hits. One of the gold winner hits was his 'Morning has
broken' which enjoyed the same popularity as 'Wild World' and 'Father
and Son'.
Born in London, he studied music at Hammersmith College, and began
composing songs focusing on personal material. In 1977, Cat Stevens
converted to Islam after nearly drowning in an accident. His brother had
given him a copy of the Qur'an which Cat Stevens claimed he found peace
to recover from the accident.
Soon after, he changed his name to Yust Islam, gave up recording pop
songs and concentrated an teaching children and now runs a Muslim School
near London. "I always stood for the elimination of conflict and wars,
and any of those causes that ignite them", says Cat Stevens now Yust
Islam. |
