ATHLETICS: It was a happy occasion for the husband and wife
combination of R. A. Chandradasa and his wife K.G.G. Menike at the 24th
Masters Track and Field Meet at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
This couple from Ratnapura qualified to represent the country at the
Asian Masters Athletic Championship to be held in Malaysia in December
this year.
Chandradasa will participate in the 70 to 75 year age category in the
300 metres and 80 metres hurdles while his wife Menike will run in 100
metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 80 metres hurdles for 60 to 65 age
group for women. There is another occasion to celebrate - the couple is
celebrating 50 years of participation in athletics this year and has
also the unique occasion of having participated in all 24 Masters
Athletic meets held so far.
The couple seems genuinely interest in athletics and has opened a
athletic museum at their home in Kuruwita in the Ratnapura District and
this is open to the general public. Chandradasa and his wife Menike were
presented a memento by Sports Minister C.B. Ratnayake at the conclusion
of the Masters Athletic Meet. |
