NDB Bank, Mount Lavinia Hotel to improve livelihoods of NE youth

The NDB Bank entered into an MOU with the International Hotel School of Mount Lavinia Hotel to implement the 'NDB Jeevana Livelihood Training/Loan Scheme'.

Under the scheme, 35 candidates will be eligible to follow six months of comprehensive tuition and practical training in Hotel Operations under the expertise of the International Hotel School. Specific areas covered will include International Cookery, Food and Beverage Service, Housekeeping, Reception, Hygiene and English, in a bid to provide sound knowledge in all aspects of the industry.

On the job placements will be made with star class hotels within close proximity to Trincomalee for two months as an integral part of the training curriculum.

Chief Executive Officer, NDB Bank, Russell De Mel said, "By identifying careers that play an important role in contributing to the development of Sri Lanka, it is our aim to enter into partnerships with industry leaders, to provide academic training which will increase livelihood opportunities to youth of the North and East.

Students interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality industry are now able to follow a comprehensive course which will enable them to emerge as an asset to the hotel trade in Sri Lanka."

Chairman Mt. Lavinia Hotel, Sanath Ukwatte said "Tourism in Sri Lanka is poised for a major take off. This initiative of the NDB Bank to give a helping hand to youth of the North and East to rebuild their lives by creating an opportunity to find a vocation in the hospitality industry is well timed."

The 'NDB Jeevana Livelihood Training/Loan Scheme' is coupled with a special personal loan issued at a concessionary rate with a grace period for payment.

NDB Bank has targeted high demand sectors such as hospitality, motor mechanism, construction and nursing for students who wish to pursue careers in these industries but lack the facilities and financial support to do so.

The loan component will comprise an allocation for tuition and training costs and other required amenities. Participants will also be entitled to an allowance to cover travelling, food and other related expenses.

The International Hotel School of Mount Lavinia Hotel provides a launching pad for those interested in taking up careers in the Hospitality Industry.

Persons over 17 years of age may enter with Ordinary Level and Advanced Level qualifications.
