Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa opened the new North-western
Naval Command headquarters at Mullikulama last Thursday.
Addressing media personnel on the occasion, Secretary of Defence,
emphasised the strategic importance of the Navy in the defence of the
island-nation. Elaborating on the Navy’s role in protecting its vital
coastline and waters, establishment of the new Naval Area Headquarters,
he said, is a step towards enhancing the country’s first line of defence.
To mark the inauguration of the new Naval Area Headquarters,
Secretary of Defence participated in a symbolic tree planting ceremony.
Six hundred tree saplings were planted inside the Naval Base premises to
coincide with the event. The Secretary of Defence then made an
inspection tour in the newly-established Mullikulama Naval Base.The
shifting of the North-western Naval Headquarters from Puttalam to
Mullikulama enables the North-western Naval Command to safeguard the
waters and land under its purview more effectively by conducting prompt
and sustainable Naval operations at sea, lagoons and on land in
accordance with national policies.
