Pakistan pummels England by 10 wickets
By A.C. de Silva
CRICKET: Pakistan cricket team was a full-fledged side when it played
against England on August 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 at Lord’s in 1982. That
encounter was won by Pakistan by the handsome margin of 10 wickets.

Ian Botham scored 69 in England’s 2nd innings total of 227. |

Zaheer Abbas made 75 in Pakistan first innings score of 428 for 8 wkts dec. |

Chris Tavare scored 82 in England’s second innings total of
276. |

Michael Eatting scored 32 not out in England first innings
total of 227. |

Imran Khan - led the Pakistan team well to clench victory over England. |

Abdul Qadir of Pakistan took 4 for 39 in England’s first
innings total of 227. |

Mohsin Khan made majestic 200 in Pakistan first innings
total of 428 for 8 wickets declared. |

Mudassar Nazar bagged 6 for 32 in England’s second innings
total of 276. |
Pakistan’s morale went up when they not only defeated England, but
they also defeated both the weather and their own lethargic approach to
the business of pacing the game. Its results are all that matters. The
fact that Pakistan bowled its overs at around 13 an hour is of no
consequence, it did however matter to the crowd that gathered for the
match.
The Pakistan batsmen got going when they went in first with opener
Mohsin Khan establishing their innings with a double hundred and before
him the previous person to reach that mark was New Zealand left-hander
Martin Donnelly way back in 1949 when all three Tests were played over
three days except against Australia and South Africa.
Mohsin played superbly. He usually stands upright and has a natural
balance. He didn’t appear to be afraid of attacking the bowlers and he
was not selfish. He was prepared to take advice from the batsman at the
other end. At this Test Mohsin was 10 Tests experience behind him.
Mohsin had something of the elegance and correctness of Reg Simpson or
another Bridge favourite Joe Hardstaff.
There was Zaheer Abbas who also batted well to give Mohsin Khan all
the support. Abbas made 75 and Mansoo Akthar 57.
On its Independence Day, the match swung Pakistan’s way. Much to the
surprise of most people, Imran Khan declared overnight score of 428 for
8 wickets as it to say it was enough. It was an imperious gesture, but
then Imran is something of an imperious captain.
Imran king among bowlers
Imran was certainly a king among bowlers. During his time he was as
fast as anyone in the world. He also had the ability to swing the ball
like a boomerang in either direction. Somehow the ball had its shine for
quite sometime and Imran was reluctant to change it. As he rubbed the
ball on his trousers a deep red mark appeared. The maintenance of the
shine on the ball helped the Pakistanis to dictate terms to the England
players.
Imran took 2 wickets in the first innings and again 2 wickets in the
second innings, but his bowling was more valuable than those figures.
Then there was Abdul Qadir, though he had four wickets in the first
innings and two more in the second innings, he bowled menacingly,
pitching his leg-spinners and googlies really well and giving the
English batsmen no room to get away to safety. The lower England batsmen
had no idea how to play him. Thus after three days and one four-hour
stoppage through rain and several other shorter interruptions, England
found itself being offered the light with two runs needed to save the
follow on and the last pair of batsmen together at the wicket. The
Englishmen Gatting and Jackman chose the light.
Follow-on enforced
Imran Khan’s first over the next morning, Jackman was leg before for
nought and England failed by just two runs to avoid the follow-on.
Had England scored 229, it was more than certain that they would have
scrambled through with a draw.
With the follow-on enforced, there was more surprises when the
Pakistani quickies were soon taken off and Mudassar Nazar was called up
to bowl.
A very occasional bowler, hitherto, he took over the bowling at the
nursery end and had instant success.
He promptly decapitated England. In eight balls he took three top
wickets without conceding a stroke worth more than a single. He bowled
very wide off the crease, got one to hold at Randall and bowled him for
nine, trapped Lamb in front of the wicket for nought and had Gower
caught by wicket keeper Wasim Bari also for nought.
It was a disappointing match for Gower as captain for the first time.
On the last day, Mudassar took two more wickets through uncontrolled
slashes from Botham who battled fairly well for his 69, Gatting caught
by Bari for 7. Meanwhile, Tavare inched his way to 82.
Mudassar picked up 6 for 32 and with only 76 wanted and a real threat
from the rain, Mohsin and Javed, prompted to open in their quest for
victory. They took 9 runs off Botham’s first over and soon the rate
required was clattering down so that the Pakistanis were able to win by
10 wickets with 29 balls to spare.
