Maliban Milk wins MACO Award 2010
The Head of Sales and Marketing of Maliban Milk Products (Pvt) Ltd.,
Nalinda Jayamanne and the CEO of Sales and Marketing of Maliban Company,
Ravi Jayawardena were recognised with an honorary award in the Sales and
Marketing segment at the MACO Special Award Ceremony 2010 organised
recently by the Mass Communicators Association of Sri Lanka at the Grand
Oriental Hotel.
REL to boost stock market
Sri Lanka’s stock market will reach new horizons with the entry of
the global financial services giant Religare Enterprises Limited (REL)
in a strategic alliance with Bartleet Trans Capital.
The New Delhi-headquartered Religare Group which serves over a
million clients including corporates, institutions, high net worth
families and individuals and retail investors in Asia, Africa, the
Middle East, Europe and the Americas, plans to set-up its footprint in
Sri Lanka initially in stock broking by taking a 50 percent stake in
Bartleet Mallory Stockbrokers (BMS). The transaction is subject to
regulatory approval.
Mobitel’s Piyakaru Purawara for Jaffna
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel in affiliation with the Ministry of
Environment and Natural Resources, recently engaged in a three day CSR
initiative, under the aegis of the ‘Urban City Development’ project, in
an effort to uplift the city of Jaffna.
‘Piyakaru Purawara’ in partnership with the Worldwide Creative
Development Organisation, set out to establish street name boards,
direction boards and message boards across the peninsula.
‘Piyakaru Purawara’ with the aim of informing and educating locals
and foreigners on the roadways in Jaffna, placed name boards on streets,
lanes and on the borders of every town. Message boards to inform the
public concerning epidemics, on minimising road accidents and the crime
rate in Jaffna were also established.
HNB donates books to 159 school libraries
Hatton National Bank (HNB) donated books and computers worth over Rs.
7.5 m to 159 underprivileged schools in the country recently. Most of
the rural schools lack even the basic facilities, such as teachers.
Libraries will promote self-study and enhance the minds of children.
HNB launched the Nena Pubuduwa school library program in 2005. The
program aims at providing opportunities to underprivileged children in
rural schools to enhance knowledge and derive the simple pleasure of
exploring the world through books with special emphasis on stimulating a
love of reading and learning in children. It works to promote
international and inter-cultural understanding and awareness, improve
and expand knowledge of English and ICT thus creating opportunities for
higher education and employment.
HNB believes in the sustainability of these projects and thus
continues to support and facilitate the teaching and learning activities
of the School.
Mobitel launches ‘Any 8 IDD’
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel’s ‘Any 8 IDD’ gives Mobitel users the
opportunity to enjoy the lowest IDD call rates for upto 8 nominated IDD
numbers while delivering crystal clear call clarity. It can be activated
by a customer on SMART Pre Paid or any Mobitel Post Paid tariff plan and
is provided free of rental.
SMART Pre Paid customers can nominate their preferred Any 8 IDD
numbers by calling 141 and selecting option 4 on their Pre Paid handset
and follow the voice instructions. Users on Upahara or any other Post
Paid plan can SMS the keyword any 8 idd to 433 and obtain the activation
codes for Any 8 IDD.
Speaking on Any 8 IDD, CEO, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Suren J.
Amarasekera said “Any 8 IDD is a key feature that reinforces the fact
that Mobitel always will continue to offer value enriching services
which are truly relevant to our customers”.
MARKSS gifts laptop
MARKSS, a healthcare organisation involved in providing top quality
pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, medical and surgical equipment to the Sri
Lankan market, presented a laptop to Dr. Joel Arunachalam, the winner at
the Annual Academic Sessions of the College of Surgeons, held recently
at the Cinnamon Lakeside.

Sampath Bank opens branch in Matara
Sampath Bank opened its 153rd branch at New Tangalle Road, Kotuwegoda,
Matara.
The new branch was opened by Deputy Chairman of Sampath Bank, Sunil
G. Wijesinghe.
As a developing township with busy commercial and residential areas,
Matara has a great demand for fast, flexible banking and financial

NDB Bank holds medical clinic
NDB Bank sponsored a Medical Clinic at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in
Lebanon recently.
The program was organised by the Sri Lankan Association in Lebanon
with over 2,000 participants. The Embassy of Lebanon and the Sri Lankan
Ambassador, M. Mahroof helped make this first ever medical clinic for
many Sri Lankan’s living in the country a success.
The medical clinic was attended by over 600 participants. A
Non-Governmental Organisation in Lebanon, Caritas provided free medicine
for the clinic together with para-medical staff assistance.
The medical clinic was conducted by two Sri Lankan doctors who were
sponsored by NDB Bank; Dr. A. P. L. de S. Seneviratne, Head/Department
of Family Medicine at the University of Sri Jayawardanapura and Dr.
Sarath R. Paranavithane, Consultant Family Physician at the Consultant
Health Care Management of Sri Lanka, who volunteered to participate in
the program.
ThinkQuest International competition 2011
The ThinkQuest International Competition 2011, sponsored by the
Oracle Education Foundation (OEF), is open to teams of students
worldwide. The competition challenges students, up to age 22, to solve a
real-world problem by applying their critical thinking, communication,
and technology skills.
“Our experience shows that when students collaborate on subjects
about which they care deeply, they produce inspiring work,” said Brad
Saffer, Vice President, Oracle Corporate Citizenship.
