Certificates for over 260,000 Grade 5 scholarship students

Two-Hundred and sixty-seven-thousand-seven-hundred and fifty of the 315,000 students who sat the Grade 5 scholarship examination and obtained 70 marks or more will receive certificates said Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisingha.The main objective of the Grade 5 scholarship examination is to evaluate the students competence and skills which were taught at the primary level.

The highest marks of the students and the lowest income of their parents are being considered to award Grade 5 scholarships, he said,

The government increased the number of scholarships from 10,000 to 15,000 a few years ago. Edirisingha said from January next year students below 10 years and those over 11 would not be awarded scholarships at the Grade 5 examination. This would give more opportunities 10-year-old students, he said.Thirty-one thousand students have qualified to receive scholarships and enter popular schools next year according to the results released, Hence, 16,000 students could gain admission to popular schools in the country.

The students who obtained the highest mark 196 - 191 are:- E.A.K. Edirisingha - Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya, N.Y. Premaratna - Horagasmulla Primary College, Divulapitiya, J.K. Pabasara, Meegahatenna primary college, Meegahatenna, R.K. Lathik - Nawodaya Mahinda College, Galle, S.K. Vidusini - Musaeus College, Colombo 7, S.S. Gimhani - Kottawa Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Kottawa, S.W.K. Dilanka - Havanpalla Primary College, Nikaweratiya, H.S.A. Mihidunge - Hemamalee Maha Vidyalaya, Ganemulla, W.R.A.C.S. Ranasingha - Welipillawa Junior College, Ganemulla, E.A.K.G. Edirisingha - Mahanama Vidyalaya, Colombo 3, M.M.T.P. Madugoda - Hirapitiya primary Vidyalaya, Veyangoda, N.S.H. Weerasingha - Horagasmulla primary College, Divulapitiya, U.L.D.M. Perera - Bandaragama Central College, Bandaragama, O.K.C. Perera - Bandaragama Central College, Bandaragama, U.L.D.G.T. Gurusingha - St. John's Girls' School, Panadura, A.J.L.S.U. Ranatunga - Christ Church Girls' Vidyalaya, Baddegama, H.D.S.S. Kumari - Maintholuwa Junior College, Warakapola, E.M.A.M. Ekanayaka - Polpithigama Central College, Polpithigama.
