New water supply projects for Jaffna, Kilinochchi

Jaffna District Secretary Imelda Sukumar said that a mega water
supply project to benefit 350,000 persons in Jaffna and Kilinochchi
Districts will be implemented at a cost of Rs. 2,070 million.
According to the District Secretary, the proposed project is to be
carried out in several phases and the first phase of the project is to
be completed by 2015.
She said that Sri Lanka Government and Asian Development Bank has
allocated the funds for the proposed project.
Accordingly people in Jaffna, Kodikamam, Chawakachcheri, Kaithadi,
Nawatkuli, Nallur, Kopai, Karawetti, Sanganai Sandilippai, Karainakar,
Achchuweli, Awarangal, Point-Pedro, Palai, Walwettithurai, Maruthankerni
island areas and the Kilinochchi will benefit by this project.
The Point-Pedro water supply project is to be implemented at a cost
of Rs. 515 million. It will be funded by Asian Development Fund (ADF)
and IFRC. Once the project is completed nearly 20,000 families in the
area will benefit.
The World Bank has allocated Rs. 225 million for the Welwettithurai
water supply project.
Through this project 10,000 families in the area will benefit.Rupees
25 million has been allocated to the Maruthankerni water supply project
and 10,000 families will benefit. Rupees 12.75 million has been
allocated to Nedunthivu project and 4,000 families will benefit.
The water supply project is to be carried out by National Water
Supply Board under the guidance of Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa and Northern Province Governor G. A. Chandrasiri.
