Consultations on power tariff revision
Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has completed the public
consultation process on setting of electricity tariffs for the year 2011
with the conclusion of public hearing held on 15th December 2010.
This was the first ever such public consultation process which gave
an opportunity to the stakeholders to express their views on electricity
tariffs proposed by the Commission, the commissioner said.
The Commission published the proposed electricity tariffs which was
formulated in consultation with the Government and other stakeholders
through press notices published on 24th November 2010 offering public
and other stakeholders to express their views on the proposed tariffs.
The Commission which was established under the Act, No 35 of 2002 was
empowered through the Sri Lanka Electricity Act. No. 20 of 2009, to
regulate the electricity industry, which comprises generation,
transmission, and distribution & supply segments.
The electricity tariffs determined by the Commission shall:
Permit Ceylon Electricity Board and Lanka Electricity Company (Pvt)
Limited to recover all reasonable costs incurred in the carrying out of
the activities authorized by its licence.
Be in accordance with policy guideline approved by the Cabinet of
Ministers.
Consider the views expressed by all stakeholders on the proposed
tariffs.
The Commission expects to consider all comments made by the
stakeholders on proposed tariffs and will announce the final tariffs for
first six months of year 2011 shortly.
