Electricity for more people
The program launched to make the goal of electricity for all in 2012,
a reality has been successful since the Ministry of Power and Energy has
provided electricity for more families in Colombo, Gampaha and
Hambantota districts during 2010.
A total of 101 new projects at a cost of Rs. 79.81 million in Colombo
and 327 projects totalling Rs. 99.66 million in Gampaha will be
launched, Ministry sources said.
All electricity supply projects in Hambantota district have since
been completed. Electricity projects in Kalutara, Galle, Matara,
Ratnapura, Kegalle, Anuradhapura and Polonnurwa districts will be
completed in 2011 while those in Puttalam, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale,
Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Trincomalee, Ampara, Batticaloa,
Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya will be completed in 2012,
sources said. Electricity is available to 87 percent of the population
at present; it will reach 100 percent in 2012, the Power and Energy
Ministry stated.
