Architects help Sri Lanka become the Wonder of Asia
by Mohammed NAALIR
"Architects and politicians play a similar role. Good products will
receive appreciation and inferior ones will receive bad marks", said
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa addressing the
inauguration of "Architect 2011" at BMICH last Wednesday.
The Minister assured on behalf of the Government that no room will be
left to cause damage to the profession of architecture. The architects
are with us to achieve the goal of making Sri Lanka Wonder of Asia, the
Minister said. He said that the development of the country depends on
the progress in investment and tourism. The environment should be
protected to attract tourists.
Our country is gifted with beautiful waterfalls, wildlife and
biodiversity.
Those valuable resources must be protected. Beautiful hotels,
bathrooms and toilets can be constructed everywhere in the world but it
is not so natural resources. Architects extended their help and advice
in the development process of Hambantota after the tsunami.
They also extended volunteer assistance in the rebuilding process.
When the first IDP camp was set up it was located on a wrong site.
The architects extended support to set it up in a proper location.
This has become one of the best IDP camps in the world, Minister
Basil Rajapaksa added.
