Gampaha to be a model district
The Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha in the Gampaha District will get a new
face lift under the new development projects launched in the district by
the Economic Development Ministry. During a recently held District
Development Committee meeting Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa said that Gampaha citizens will be benefited with improved
water and sanitation facilities, power and energy services, road
development, transport facilities, health and education services.
Rs. 135 million was allocated for several development activities such
as constructing a grid substation at the Kerawalapitiya power plant to
supply low capacity electricity to factories in Wattala and coastal
environment conservation activities in Uswetakeiyawa. Minister Rajapaksa
said that all unauthorized structures built under wrong political
influence will be removed as these buildings are obstructing the canal
system of the Wattala town causing floods even during a minor rain.
Lead by Provincial Councillor Nimal Lansa the team of Provincial
Councillors raised the difficulties that Provincial Councils meet in
garbage disposal. The massive amount of polythene that accumulates
through consumer and commercial activities are a threat to the
environment as the current way of life has turned citizens into
producing garbage. Therefore, the Ministry of Economic Development, the
Consumer Affairs Authority and other related authorities will take
measures to encourage manufacturers to produce biodegradable polythene,
Minister Rajapaksa said.
Under the instructions of Minister Rajapaksa the Dutch canal will be
completely cleaned and restored after twenty years. The Regional Road
Development Authority have already concreted more than twenty rural
roads in the area.
