President Mahinda Rajapaksa opened the newly built Central Fish Market at Peliyagoda yesterday. The new complex on a sprawling 3.17 hectare land along Katunayake Expressway, was funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Govt. of Sri Lanka at a cost of Rs. 1.9 billion. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Minister of Engineering, Housing Construction and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa laid the foundation stones at the Mount Hill Colony to build houses under the Janasevana housing scheme. The home garden project under the Mahinda Chinthana is being carried out extensively throughout the country. Senior Minister for Urban Affairs A. H. M. Fowzie launched the home garden project in Colombo at the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) housing scheme in Maligawatte. Colombo Divisional Secretary K. G. Tharmatilleka and ITN Director Hasim Omar participated in the event.

Cash prizes amounting to Rs. 500,000 will be awarded to the best designer, best Sarasaviya creation, best Vesak picture and best Vesak poetic creation. The art exhibition “Kiriveduna Yal Paanam”, a concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, organised by the Arts Forum of Ananda College and held at the Centenary Hall will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa , tomorrow at 8.00 am. The expo will continue for three days.

Retired police inspectors to become Coroners

Minister of Justice Rauf Hakeem has announced that retired police inspectors would be appointed as Coroners in future.

Minister Hakeem was speaking at a ceremony to hand over appointment letters to retired police inspectors as Justices of Peace. The event was held at the Justice Ministry auditorium, last week.

Minister Hakeem praised the retired police officers, saying that they were doing a responsible job by settling the problems of the public even after their retirement.

"Therefore, in recognition of their services, the Ministry of Justice has decided to appoint them as Justices of Peace", Minister said.



Baby Janindu needs help

Baby M.S. Janindu Malshan of Palatuwa, Malimbada is affected with an acute renal failure. He is being treated by Prof. U.K. Jayantha, Consultant Paediatrician of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

Due to needy circumstances, his parents find in difficult to settle his medical bills and request public contributions to be remitted to A/c No. 71403624 Bank of Ceylon, (Super Grade Branch) Matara.
