More jobs for Lankans in Qatar

Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Dilan Perera will begin an official visit to Qatar today on an invitation extended by the Qatari Government to explore the possibility of getting more jobs for Sri Lankans.

A delegation comprising senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau and Chief Executive Officers of recruitment agencies in Sri Lanka will accompany the minister.

Apart from bilateral meetings with the Qatar ministers, the Sri Lankan delegation will conduct two meetings to discuss ways and means to increase employment opportunities for Sri Lankan nationals in Qatar.

These meetings will be with a cross-section of Sri Lankans living in Qatar and representatives of recruitment agencies and companies in Qatar. A large number of companies and recruiting agencies has been invited to these meeting by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha.

Earlier in February, this year Minister of External Affairs Prof. G L Peiris during his official visit to Qatar held many bilateral discussions with the Emir and ministers.

As Qatar prepares for the 2022 Soccer World Cup, discussions were held on Sri Lanka’s expertise in the construction services sector and skilled employment opportunities for Sri Lankan employees.

A proposal was also presented to the Qatari private sector to set up vocational training centres in Sri Lanka that would provide systematic training for jobs including opportunities in the medical sector for nurses and pharmacists.

There are around 100,000 Sri Lankan employees in Qatar in different sectors in various positions.
