Housing construction work expedited in Jaffna
Housing construction activities for IDPs have been expedited in the
Jaffna district. Tamil people who experienced many difficulties during
the conflict will benefit through these housing projects, Jaffna
District Secretary Imelda Sukumar said.
The construction of 6,406 houses out of a total of 13,350 to resettle
the internally displaced people (IDPs) in Jaffna has been completed
while the remaining 3,944 houses are under construction. These housing
projects have been funded by the World Bank, according to Sukumar.
Meanwhile, several NGOs have launched a project to construct 2225
housing units to relocate IDPs. A total of 1,268 housing units have
already been completed.
The Indian Government too has pledged its assistance to construct
7,400 houses in Jaffna.
She said all arrangements have been completed for the proposed Indian
Government-funded housing scheme. Construction will commence shortly.
