The SL Magazine, a quarterly magazine in English, to enlighten the international community as well as our reading public on Sri Lankan icons was launched by the Government Information Department recently. Here the Director General of Government Information, Prof. Ariyarathne Athugala presents the maiden copy to the Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa at the Ministry office.


The Colours Nite of the University of Colombo was held recently under the patronage of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa. Here Speaker Rajapaksa lights the traditional oil lamp to begin the proceedings as MP Sri Ranga and Vice Chancellor University of Colombo Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama look on.

A campaign to distribute cows to 125 farmer families of the lower income group, in and around the Embilipitiya area was organised under the patronage of the President of Jathika Hela Urumaya, Dr. Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera, at Thunkama Hagala Bodhiraja Child Development Centre recently to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi. Here the Ven. Dr. Sobitha Thera anoints the cows with ‘Pirith pan’ before being released to the farmers, which were donated by a group of devotees in Singapore and Taiwan inspired by the Most Ven. Haithau. It was organised by Ms. Piayin together with the Bodhiraja Buddhist Society of Singapore.

Hayleys donate flags for Amadahara

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) will set up the Amadahara Sadaham Vesak Zone to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi, under the guidance of ANCL Chairman Bandula Padmakumara. The Amadahara which will be held from May 17 to 19 opposite Lake House is being held for the 10th time in succession.

Hayleys Consumer Products Ltd donated Buddhist flags worth Rs. 50,000 to the ANCL to be flown along D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, yesterday at the ANCL.

The Vesak Zone will include the area around Lake House, Presidential Secretariat and the Air Force Headquarters with the Telecom and the Fort Railway Station also covered.


Vesak celebrations in Matara

A series of Pinkamas has been organised by the Chief Incumbents of Buddhist temples in the Matara district to commerate the 2,600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi which falls on May 17.

A massive sil campaign for Dhamma school students, their parents and teachers would be part of the celebrations, Rev. Ehalape Jothirathana Thera, Secretary of the Matara Sasanarakshaka Balamandalaya said.


Exposition of Buddha Relics

An exposition of Sacred Buddha Relics will be held from 1.00 pm to 10.00 pm tomorrow at the Kelaniya Toxic Hospital to mark the Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi 2600.

The Relics of Arahat Seevali and Ananda too will be displayed under the patronage of Ven. Pitiduwa Dhammika Thera and Ven. Kotagala Chandrathana Thera. A series of pinkamas will follow:

All members of the Sri Lanka Ayurveda Toxic Physicians Association will participate in the event, the Association’s Registrar, Dr. Vinitha Kalyani Pathiraja said.


Katunayake EPZ celebrates Vesak

Staff of the Zonal Office of the BOI at Katunayake Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), in collaboration with the BOI Enterprises has organised a series of religious events to commemorate the 2600th Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi.

The Program will commence with a Dhamma Sermon to be delivered by Ven. Dr. Teripehe Siridhamma (M.A.) of the Historic Keragala Maha Pirivena from 4 p.m. tomorrow at the BOI Office Premises at Katunayake.

There will also be a Vesak Lantern Exhibition and Display from May 17 - 19 and Buddhist Devotional Songs Competition presented by the employees of the BOI factories at the KEPZ, commencing from 7 p.m. on the May 17.


SLMC delegates conference today

The 23rd delegate’s Conference of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress will be held at Vavuniya, New Town Hall at 2.00 p.m. today Around 2000 Delegates will take part at this Conference from all over the Country where the new High command of the Party will be introduced. Few amendments to the party constitution will also be made. The Working Committee will also be nominated.
