Operators of pirate TV station arrested

Two men who had surreptitiously operated a pirate television station was arrested by a team of police officers following a raid carried out on an upstair house in Mahaiyawa, Kandy last Friday, Police Media Spokesman, SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Sunday Observer.

According to police, the two men had televised 35 foreign programs to a selected audience in the Kandy town and suburbs since 2008. The operation was illegal as the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission had not issued a licence for them to operate a private television station in Kandy, police said.

Following the raid, Police recovered 48 units used for televising programs. The suspects are being questioned further to see whether they have links to any subversive elements. The suspects were produced before Courts and a detention order obtained to investigate them further.
