Mohan De Alwis

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd (SLI), the largest composite insurance provider in the country holding Rs 88.9 billion in assets and the highest contributor to the shareholders fund with its contribution of Rs 18 billion, is planning to diversify into the Hotel Sector this year.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mohan De Alwis said the company holding the highest life fund worth Rs 49.5 billion is planning to build a 200 room hotel in Hambantota with an investment of Rs 4.5 billion.

He said discussions are under way to select a managing and equity partner for the project which is expected to commence this year. “We believe that with this investment, SLI will be able to contribute towards sustainable economic growth of Sri Lanka”, he said.

De Alwis said that foreign tour operators and management companies will do the marketing of the hotel and the majority of the tourists coming to the hotel will be pre booked tourists. “Therefore, we should cater to the requirements of the managers of the hotel”, he said. -SG
