JICA funds bridge across Batticaloa lagoon
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will grant Japanese Yen
1206 m to construct a 210 metre bridge across the Batticaloa lagoon.
At present, people have to travel more than one hour by road to get
to the other side of the lagoon or use small ferries, which operate once
in every half an hour and accommodates only two vehicles at a time.
This constrains the people from accessing basic services such as
health and education and transporting commercial goods to other areas.
For reconstruction and development of the Eastern part of the
country, especially after the tsunami disaster in 2004, JICA supported
infrastructure such as building roads, water supply, bridges, and
irrigation facilities by combining technical cooperation.
