Techno training for fisherfolk
by Mohammed NAALIR
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry is planning to
provide proper training to fishermen of modern technology, in handling
modern fishing equipment, life saving methods during an unexpected
accident in the sea and vessel maintenance , Minister Rajitha Senaratne
said.
He said that training will help prevent accidents at sea. The
Minister said that every fisherman must be ready during accidents in the
sea and to maintain their vessels. The proposed training program will
help minimise accidents in the sea. Meanwhile the Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources Development Ministry plans to provide 6 mobile cool rooms to
Jaffna District fishermen, the Minister said. The fishermen can sell
their harvest to the vehicles facilitated with cool rooms at the
fisheries harbour.
The Minister expresses confidence that this could help minimise the
post-harvest losses and improve quality and safety of fish products to
acceptable standards while conserving the aquatic environment.
He also added that through the introduction of modern technology in
the fishing industry it could increase employment opportunities in
fisheries and related industries and improve the socio-economic status
of the fisher community. Via quality exports the foreign exchange
earning from fish product can be increased.
