Major honours for Vidyartha

Vidyartha College, Kandy took the major honours in their inter-school cricket match against Dharmaraja College which ended in a tame draw at Lake View grounds, Kandy yesterday.

Vidyartha College perhaps created a sort of history when they for the first time enforced the follow on Dharmaraja College in a cricket match at this level. Full credit should go to their new cricket coach Anuruddha Basnayake for moulding them into a fighting outfit.

In reply to Vidyartha's first innings total of 260 all out, Rajans did not fare too well this morning as they lost wickets at regular intervals. They were 80 for 7 at one stage and were dismissed for 107 shortly after lunch.

Right arm medium pacer Isuru Weerasinghe took 4 for 32 and off spinner Tilina Rupasena took 3 for 11.

The Rajans facing a deficit of 153 and asked to follow on fared very much better to score 113 for 1 off 49 overs by stumps. Junior national poolist Sasith Gunasekera played a defiant knock of 53 not out while U. Wijesiri made 41 to stall Vidyartha College.

Incidentally Keshan Gamage who made 126 not out in the Vidyartha innings has been selected the most popular outstation cricketer by the Sunday Observer.

Vidyartha College 260 all out.

Dharmaraja College 107 all out in 42 overs

(K. Ratnayake 20, Nuwan Karunaratne 36, C. C. Silva 14, V. Wijeratne 12 not out, Tilina Rupasena 3 for 11, Isuru Weerasinghe 4 for 32) and 113 for 1 in 49 overs (Sasith Gunasekera 53 not out, U. Wijesiri 41).
