Armed Forces Remembrance Day
The main multi-religious ceremony of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day
will be held today at the Cenotaph, Viharamaha Devi Park, Colombo 7 with
the participation of VIPs. The three Service Commanders, representatives
from diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka and representatives from 42
ex-servicemen’s associations.
The ceremony will commence at 8.30 a.m.
Legal Advisor to Defence Ministry
Attorney-at-Law, Hari Guptha Rohanadheera has been appointed
Principal Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Defence. He had also been
attached to the Ranaviru Authority as its Legal Advisor.
An old boy of Ananda College, Colombo, he had set many records at
Inter-School and National Athletic Meets.
He is the son of the late Prof. Mendis Rohanadheera.
Heart patient needs help
Retired teacher, A.D.S. Piyasiri of 108, Manjula Saw Mills Estate,
Bataleeya, Pasyala is suffering from a heart condition for which he has
to undergo an urgent surgical procedure to save his life.
His pension of Rs.12,500 per mensem is hardly sufficient to keep the
homefires burning. Out of the estimated cost of Rs.485,000 for the
surgery, Rs.150,000 has been approved from the President's Fund, which
will cover only a part of the cost.
He appeals for financial assistance from the generous public and
charity organisations.

Chemistry exhibition
The College of Chemical Sciences will hold a chemistry exhibition
titled CHEMEX 2 and Open Days at the Institute of Chemistry Headquarters
at Adamantane House, Welikada, Rajagiriya from November 24 to 26.
Prof. J. N. Oleap Fernando, Honorary Rector of the College said the
event, which is being organised as part of the UN declaration of 2011 as
the International Year of Chemistry, will be inaugurated at 10 a.m. on
November 24 by Errol Fernando, who has over 50 years of chemistry
teaching experience including a period of over three decades in Karachi,
Pakistan.
Prizes will also be distributed on that occasion to Advanced Level
students who had excelled in the National Titration Competition that is
being organised from November 16 for the first time in Sri Lanka.
Oratorical contest in Kurunegala
The Sri Rathnodaya English Dhamma School at Ku/D.B. Welagedara Madya
Maha Vidyalaya will hold an oratorical elocution contest for children in
the Kurunegala district next month.
The main objective of the contest is to encourage the children to
learn the art of public speaking, acquire proficiency in the English
Language and appreciate the teaching of the Buddha to lead a harmonious
life.
The conditions are as follows:
The contest will be conducted in the English language only and it
will be confined to the children in Kurunegala district. It will be
based on the topic ”Vidya dadati vinayan”. Children age between 10 to 15
are eligible to participate. Duration five minutes. A self-prepared
application with the intended speech should be sent alone with two self
addressed stamped enveloped by registered post on or before November 20
to: Secretary, Dhamma School Association
Sri Rathnodaya English Dhamma School, Sewminimashapaya,
Balagallawatta, Ganewatte, Nikadalupota.
The contest will commence on December 24.Admission cards will be
posted to every eligible candidate by December 10. Those who do not
receive their cards on time should contact the organisers. The date of
the finals will be intimated to the contestants.
All candidates are advised to dress in white.
Winners will be awarded prizes and certificates in the following
manner:
i. First prize Rs. 5,000
ii. Second prize Rs. 2,500
iii. Third prize Rs. 750
The judges’ decision will be final.
Christmas carols 2011
The Christmas Society of the Colombo South International College will
conduct its Christmas Carol 2011 on December 9 at the College for the
tenth consecutive year. A sermon will delivered by Rev. Roshan Mendis.
Mrs. Dilki Imaduwavitanage is Chief organiser.
There will be Bible readings, a nativity play, drumming episodes and
hymns and a Sinhala presentation.
Santa Claus will be one of the highlights.
Two-day workshop on ‘Liver transplantation’
A two-day workshop on ‘Introduction to Liver Transplantation’
organised by the Sri Lanka Society of Critical Care and Emergency
Medicine will be held during the Annual Congress 2011, on Monday and
Tuesday, (Nov. 14-15) from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm at the Hilton Hotel,
Colombo.
Lecturers from the Mayo Clinic, Florida, USA will address the
gathering.
Lyceum prize-giving
The annual prize-giving of Junior Section of Lyceum International
School, Nugegoda will be held tomorrow at 6.00 p.m. at the School
premises, Nugegoda.
Nadeesha Epasinghe, Deputy Head of UK Trade and Investment, British
High Commission, Sri Lanka will be the chief guest. Mohal Lal Grero,
Founder of Lyceum International Schools, Ms. Wenuri Hettiarachchi,
Principal, Nikitha Grero, Deputy Principal of Lyceum International
School, Nugegoda will be the guests of honour.
Maha Graha pooja on Feb. 18
A Maha Graha pooja to ward off the possible evil effects as a result
of Saturn’s movements from Virgo to Libra and invoke blessings on the
country, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Security Forces, the police and
the people will be held on Friday, November 18 at Kandeviharaya, Parana
Veyangoda, Nittambuwa.
It has been organised under the patronage of Ven. Tellambure Soratha
Thera.
