Trinity College further enhanced their claim as the best schools
cricket team in the island when they coasted to their ninth outright win
for the season by defeating St. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia by an
innings and 124 runs in their inter-school cricket match concluded at
the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy yesterday. What is most remarkable by
Trinity's win is that they have won all their matches by an innings
which may itself be a record.
The Thomians 266 runs behind on first innings and forced to follow on
fared a little better in the second innings scoring 137 all out.
Trinity's win was a little delayed following a stubborn knock of 35
not out by N. Wickremanayake but he could not stop the inevitable.
Off spinner Janishka Premasinghe took 5 for 43 and in the first
innings had the figures of 4 for 18 returning a match haul of 9 for 61.
He has now captured 82 wickets for the season and could well become the
first school cricketer from Kandy to capture 100 wickets this season. He
could come closer to this goal when Trinity College plays Zahira College
at Asgiriya on Monday.
Trinity College 314 for 7 declared.
St. Thomas College 53 all out and 137 all out in 65.2 overs (U. de
Mel 35, Chamod Pathirana 22, N. Wickremanayake 35 not out, Janishka
Premasinghe 5 for 43, Lakshan Jayasinghe 3 for 8). |
