by L.S. Ananda WEDAARACHCHI
"Connecting girls, inspiring futures" is the theme of this year's
International Women's Day celebration on Thursday.
Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karalliyadde
said it is of national importance to motivate parents, especially
mothers to exercise close vigilance on female children against sexual
abuse and other forms of violence. Crimes against women and female
children are on the increase, the Minister said.
Celebrations to mark Women's Day will be held at the "Temple Trees"
on March 8 under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Three-thousand women from various parts of the country representing
women organisations registered with the Women's Affairs Ministry will
attend the meeting.
Attorney General Shanthi Eva Wanasundara will deliver the keynote
address on the current rules and regulations governing women in Sri
Lanka, the Minister said.
A program against harassing and killing women and children and
preventing such abuses chaired by the First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa
will be launched, the Minister said.
Nine women who worked tirelessly for the emancipation of women will
be felicitated at the meeting. A book on great Sri Lankan women who
pioneered the cause of women empowerment will also be launched at the
meeting, he said.
Minister Karalliyadde said that he would soon seek the views of all
segments on the proposed amendments to the Abortion Law.
