Rohan Amarasinghe's current exhibition of paintings entitled ‘Life’
at Saskia Fernando Gallery 61 Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 7 will
conclude on May 24.
After holding his first exhibition in 1978, he joined the advertising
industry and moved away from the art scene until his next exhibition in
1997. The long withdrawal allowed him to develop as a graphic designer,
the traits of which can be viewed in the conceptualisation and
minimalism of his canvases.
Nostalgie 2
The Alliance Francaise de Kotte will present ‘Nostalgie 2’, an
exhibition of black and white photographs by Kumar de Silva, at the
Harold Peries Gallery of the Lionel Wendt Arts Centre, Colombo on
Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 01.
Sponsored by Metropolitan Canon, the expo is a sequel to last year’s
successful ‘Nostalgie’ which showcased France in her multi-dimensional
splendour.Taking visitors through random scenes of Paris and across
different parts of France, ‘Nostalgie 2’ is open to the public from 10
am to 7 pm on both days.
The Alliance Francaise de Kotte is affiliated to the Fondation
Alliance Francaise in Paris and enjoys the full patronage of the
Government of France and the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka.
Suddek Oba Amathai
The critically acclaimed drama Suddek Oba Amathai by
UdayasiriWickremaratne is set to enthral theatre goers this weekend as
it goes on the boards on May 26 at Tower Hall and May 27 at the Wendt.
Shows will be at 3.30pm and 6.30 pm.
Series of dramas
Production of children’s plays Punchi muva, Dagayata hoda padamak,
Satiyakata varak and stage plays Sutara puncha and Sinhina mandiraya and
a teledrama Rasa saha katu has just commenced and Gunapala
Karunapathirana who created the series of dramas offers opportunities
for young and veteran artistes to take part in the productions.
Tagore seminar and publication
A seminar on Tagore and his visits to Sri Lanka in collaboration with
Contemporary Centre for Indian Studies, University of Colombo, will be
held on June 12 in Colombo. Three Indian scholars and seven Sri Lankan
scholars are expected to participate. Prof. Radha Chakravarty, Prof.
Bharati Ray, Prof. Sushoban Adhikary will particpate from India and
Prof. Wimal Dissanayake, Prof. K.N.O Dharmadasa, Dr. Sandagomi
Coperahewa, Prof. Vini Vitharana, Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam, Ravibandhu
Vidyapathi, Chandragupta Thenuwera are the Sri Lankan scholars
participating in the seminar. It was organised by the Indian Cultural
Centre to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate poet
Rabindranath Tagore. Those who are interested in attending the one-day
seminar are requested to register themselves along with contact details
at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo, 16/2 Gregory’s Road, Colombo 07.
Hunuwataye Kathawa
Henry Jayasena’s acclaimed play Hunuwataye Kathawa will be staged on
May 25 at 3.30 p.m. and 7p.m. at Lionel Wendt Theatre. The cast includes
Nalin Pradeepa Uduwela, Nimal Jayasinghe, Ruwini Manamperi and
Prasnajith Abesuriya.
Nari Burathi

Nari Burathi, the latest comedy by Sarath Kothalawala will go on the
boards on May 26 at 3.30 p.m. and 6.45 p.m. at the New Town Hall,
Colombo 7.
Sokari
Sokari,an old folk drama which was formed according to traditions of
Shanthikarmas ( ritualistic incantations ) that were performed for the
goddess of Paththini soliciting fertility and prosperity, will go on the
boards today at 3.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. at Tower Hall. The play is
directed by Jaliya Rajapaksa.
Geoffrey Bawa Memorial Lecture 2012
The Geoffrey Bawa Memorial Lecture will be held on May 25 at the P.
de S. Kularatne Hall Ananda College, Maradana at 6.30 p.m.
This year the lecture will be delivered by Architect Bijoy Jain of
Studio Mumbai Architects. |
