Former Sunday Observer-Caltex rugby star Thajudeen dies

Wasim Thajudeen the utility Havelock SC player who set the rugby
field on fire with his brand of play was engulfed in flames when his
car, while driving crashed into a wall and Wasim died on the spot last
Thursday plunging the country's rugby fraternity into deep sorrow. He
was a much sought after player by many rugby playing clubs in the
country, for his dynamism on the rugby field.
Thajudeen was voted as the Sunday Observer/Caltex Most popular Rugby
player in 2009 which proved his popularity beyond doubt. He represented
S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia from 2001 to 2003 and in the same year
he was a member of the schools under-19 team, thereafter he joined
Havelock Sports Club soon after leaving school. After a successful
season he was appointed as captain of the Havelock SC in 2009, but could
not play due to a nagging injury.
Thajudeen was planning to make a comeback to competitive rugby this
year for his club he adored Havelock SC, subject to fitness.
He represented Sri Lanka at the 2007/2008 Hong Kong Sevens tournament
under Pradeep Liyanage. He was loyal to his club Havelock SC during good
times and bad. The 28-year-old Thajudeen was a team man to the core, and
an extrovert who was an extremely popular figure among his friends and
colleagues.
