More police dogs to check crime trend
by Jayampathy JAYASINGHE
The
police will set up more kennels to check the rising trend of crime in
many parts of the country.
The new kennels will be set up with dogs trained in special skills
such as detecting explosives, narcotics and tracking dogs who could
trace criminals who flee from the scene of the crime and patrol dogs to
tackle those who attack policemen during special operations, Police
Media Spokesman, SP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.
In addition to the 49 kennels, six more kennels will be set up in
Puttalam, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Thambuttegama and
Kankesanturai in the near future.
However, dogs trained in detecting narcotics will be deployed in
areas where there is an influx of drugs.
During the crime operation at Kahawatte a few months ago, a police
sniffer dog traced the suspect who allegedly killed two women by hacking
them to death with an axe, police said.
