Temperance Association centenary
The centenary celebrations of the Sri Lanka temperance Association
will be held at 2.30 p.m. today at the Kularathne Hall of Ananda
College, Colombo under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and
the Mahanayakes of the Three Chapters.
Chairman of the Association Ven. Harispattuwe Ariyawanshalankara
Thera would take part in the event which would also see the launch of
the publication Amadyapa Shathaka Udanaya and Amadyapa Shathaka Samaruwa.
An art exhibition comprising the winners of an islandwide art
competition was held on July 11 and 12 at the Art Gallery.
The Association which was set up to free Sri Lanka from colonialists
celebrated its centenary on July 13, 2012.
Applications called for CEWET schols
Applications are invited from the children of estate workers for
award of scholarships by the Ceylon Estate Workers’ Education Trust (CEWET).
The scholarships are available for G.C.E. Advanced Level, undergraduate
courses and for students undergoing vocational technical education in
any of the Government Technical Colleges.
Candidates below the age of 25 years and who have passed G.C.E.
Ordinary or Advance Level examination with either Mathematics or
Arithmetic at the G.C.E. ‘O’ Level exam are eligible to apply.
Application forms are available at the High Commission of India,
Colombo-03 and the Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy.

National Language Week
Two events to present certificates to Government officials who passed
the national language competency examination would be held this week.
This would be with regard to the National Language Week, from tomorrow
to July 22. Officers numbering 510 from the Southern Province and 361
from the Sabaragamuwa Province would receive their certificates on July
17 and 18.
Heart patient: Appeal from parents
Four-year-old
baby girl B.R.M. Thasmini Thihansa of 440, Hospital Rd, Ranala,
Nawagamuwa is suffering from Atrial septal defect. Consultant cardio
thoracic surgeon Dr. (Mrs) Kanchana Singappuli has recommended open
heart surgery which is expected to cost around Rs. 380,000.
Her father B.R.M.A.A. Bandara is unable to meet the cost and hence
appeals for kind donations from the generous public.
