Australia beat England by 3 runs in exciting game!
By A.C de Silva
A NERVE TINGLING MATCH: There were several great Test matches in the
past to match the present-day Tests. One of the great matches of the
past was the one between Australia and England the fourth at Old
Trafford from July 24 to 26 in 1902 where Australia won by the
wafer-thin margin of three runs.
In the series, the first two Test matches were drawn and Australia
had won the third Test at Sheffield by 143 runs great interest was
focussed on the fourth encounter at Old Trafford.
Australian skipper Joe Darling won the toss for Australia in this
game and Victor Trumper about whom many wonderful stories have come
forth was at his best when he opened the innings with Reggie Duff.
Trumper blazed to 104 runs in 115 minutes to set a blistering pace
and he became the first batsman to score a century before the lunch
interval in a Test match on the opening day.
The opening partnership was worth 135 runs when Trumper was caught by
wicket-keeper Dick Lilley off England's left-arm spinner Wilfred Rhodes.
With Duff, Clem Hill and Darling all contributing half-centuries,
Australia reached 299 in their first innings. For the Englishmen there
was Bill Lockwood who captured six wickets for 48 runs and it was a
great performance by the English fast bowler against the wonderful
batting by the Australians.
England poor start 44/5
When it came for the Englishmen to show what they could do against
the Aussie bowlers they were somewhat in a tight spot and lost five
wickets for 44 runs - and this was a terrible shock.
Aussie bowlers Hugh Trumble and Jack Saunders - the two spinners who
sliced through the English batting. At stumps on the first day, England
had reached a shaky 76 for 5 wickets with the Australians holding all
the aces.
Came day two and England had two saviours in Stanley Jackson (128)
and Len Braund (65) who brought some respectability to the total with
their sixth-wicket partnership of 141 runs which took the total to 185
runs for six wickets from that miserable looking score of 44 for 5
wickets.
But despite the sixth-wicket partnership between Jackson and Braund,
the Australians gained a first innings lead of 37 runs.
Though the lead gained by the Aussies was small, it proved quite a
worthwhile lead as wickets tumbled dramatically in the second innings.
The Aussies were dramatically all out for 86 runs.
Paceman Bill Lockwood who grabbed 6 for 48 in 20.1 overs in the first
innings was at it again in the second innings and grabbed 5 for 28 to
have eye-catching match figures of 11 for 76 runs.
England's target on third and final day was just 124 runs. It had
rained the previous night and that made the task more difficult. England
skipper Archie MacLaren and Palairet made a steady Start with an opening
stand of 44 runs but thereafter wickets started to fall quickly. But
then wickets started to fall quickly with Aussie bowlers Trumble (6 for
53) and Saunders (4 for 52) making inroads to the batting and England
collapsed for 120 which gave Australia the win.
