Provincial Council elections for the North Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces will be held on Saturday. This time around the Tamils and Muslims have joined and are focussing attention on the development drive.

Ethnic co-existence

Q: The UPFA campaign in the Eastern Province for the PC election is different from other campaigns. Can you elaborate.

A: The UPFA campaign aims at promoting ethnic co-existence to sustain the newly earned peace. The UPFA is committed to a united Sri Lankan nation.

Q: What have you to say about the others.

A: While the Tamil National Alliance is campaigning for a Tamil Chief Minister, the SLMC is campaigning for a Muslim Chief Minister and the UNP for a Sinhala chief minister, the UPFA will appoint a suitable Chief Minister for the Eastern Province which is now being developed as a prosperous province.

Election results will reveal attitude of Tamils

Q: The remarks on Eelam by some TNA leaders at the PC election campaign rallies could affect the forward march of the country after three decades of terrorism. What is your view.

A: Even the little faith reposed by the Tamils in the Tamil National Alliance will disappear due to such statements.

Q: Do you think that the masses in the Eastern Province believe the TNA leaders as most of them don’t even visit their areas.

A: The PC election results will reveal the attitude of Tamils towards them.

To win as many seats

Q: Some people say that the SLMC’s PC election campaign destroys the unity of the people in the area. What do you have to say

A: The SLMC’s agenda at the PC election is to win as many seats as possible on ethnic grounds and bargain with the UPFA when it runs the PC administration.

Q: Even past records show it.

A: The SLMC’s policy is to get the biggest chunk benefits and perks at every election and support the party that forms the government whether it is the UNP or SLFP.
