NCPA initiates tough action against child abuses

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has highlighted that steps have already been taken by the Authority to eliminate all forms of abuses against children and women.

A Bill has also been presented in Parliament to impose rigorous punishment on those who abuse children and women in future.

Nearly 50 to 75 child and women's abuse cases were reported from various parts of the country during the past three months.

NCPA Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake told the Sunday Observer that with the support of Members of Parliament for this Bill, strict laws will be initiated to punish offenders without considering their positions in society. She said eliminating the abuse of children and women is a national need in a cultured society such as ours and no sympathy will be shown towards offenders.

She said the menace should be eliminated forthwith and offenders severely dealt with.

The NCPA warned parents also to be vigilant of their children at all times and not isolate them under any circumstances. She also asked mothers who leave the country for foreign employment to be more cautious of their young children during their stint abroad as children are more valuable than anything else.
