All sections of society have condemned the attack on the Sri Lankan pilgrims in South India

Q: What are your views on the treatment meted out to Sri Lankan pilgrims in Tamil Nadu?

A: The attack on the pilgrims is only an individual act and neither the Tamil Nadu government nor the opposition, the AIDMK had any knowledge of the attack.

Q: What action was taken by the Sri Lankan government with regard to this incident.

A: The Indian Central government had assured that all possible measures to protect Sri Lankan tourists and pilgrims to India in the future, when the Sri Lanka Government took matter up with its Indian counterpart.

 

Close relations with India will continue

Q:What has the government done with regard to the situation in Tamil Nadu.

A: We have already discussed the situation with the Indian Central Government. They have assured us of a peaceful atmosphere for Sri Lankans in South India.

Q: Don't you think that this type of incident disturbs close relations between the two countries?

A: Cultural, religious and business ties between Sri Lanka and India will continue, despite certain setbacks. The Sri Lanka Government will make every effort to maintain close relations with India.

Q: What could be done to prevent the repetition of such incidents in future.

A: The Sri Lanka government should foster closer relations with Tamil Nadu since state government in India have substantial powers at these.

Q: Don't you think over opposition has an important role to play in external affairs.

A: The UNP is ready to help the government resolve external issues such as diplomatic turmoil with South India.
